Meet the Melanocyte
Melanocytes are specialized cells located in the deepest layer of the epidermis. Their job is to produce melanin, the pigment that gives our skin, hair, and eyes their color while also protecting our DNA from ultraviolet radiation.
Melanin is one of the skin’s greatest defense mechanisms.
When ultraviolet light reaches the skin, melanocytes begin producing more pigment, packaging it into tiny structures called melanosomes. These melanosomes are then transferred into surrounding skin cells where they form a protective shield over the nucleus, helping absorb and scatter ultraviolet radiation before it can damage DNA.
In healthy skin, this process is carefully regulated.
Inflammation changes that regulation.
How Inflammation Stimulates Pigment Production
Whenever inflammation occurs, whether from acne, eczema, injury, sun exposure, or even an overly aggressive treatment, the immune system releases chemical messengers designed to coordinate healing.
