Why Is My Skin So Dry in Denver? A Guide to High-Altitude Skin
Share
If your skin suddenly feels tighter, flakier, more sensitive, or somehow both oily and dry after spending time in Colorado, you’re probably not imagining it.
Denver’s climate creates a very different environment for your skin than more humid parts of the country. Between our low humidity, high altitude, frequent sun exposure, wind, indoor heating, and dramatic temperature shifts, your skin is constantly working to hold onto water.
And sometimes it simply can’t keep up.
At The Skin Sanctum in Denver, dehydration and impaired barrier function are two of the most common things we see even in clients who would never describe their skin type as dry.
Dry Skin and Dehydrated Skin Aren’t the Same Thing
This distinction matters.
Dry skin generally refers to a skin type that produces less sebum, or oil.
Dehydrated skin is skin that lacks sufficient water.
You can have both, but you can also have oily, acne-prone skin that is significantly dehydrated. In fact, we see this combination all the time.
Dehydration may show up as tightness after cleansing, increased sensitivity, fine lines that suddenly look more noticeable, dullness, flaking, makeup sitting strangely on the skin, or skin that seems oily on the surface but uncomfortable underneath.
This is one reason simply reaching for a heavier moisturizer doesn’t always solve the problem.
Why Denver Is So Hard on Your Skin
Your outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, acts as part of your body’s barrier between you and the outside environment.
One of its jobs is limiting how much water escapes from the skin.
Water naturally moves through the epidermis and evaporates into the surrounding environment in a process called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL.
When the air around us is dry, maintaining adequate hydration can become more challenging. Add Colorado winters, heaters running indoors, hot showers, wind exposure, exfoliation, retinoids, acne treatments, and our love of active skincare, and that barrier can become overwhelmed pretty quickly.
The result isn’t always dramatically peeling skin.
Sometimes it looks like acne.
Sometimes it looks like redness.
Sometimes your products suddenly sting.
Sometimes your skin just feels like nothing you put on it is enough.
Your Skin Barrier Needs More Than Water
Hydrating ingredients are wonderful, but healthy barrier function isn’t just about adding water.
The stratum corneum is often described using a “bricks and mortar” model. The corneocytes are the bricks, while lipids surrounding them including ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids help form the mortar.
That lipid structure helps keep water in and irritants out.
This is why a good Denver skincare routine often needs a combination of hydration and lipid support.
Humectants such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA, and other components of the skin’s natural moisturizing factors can help attract and bind water.
Emollient and occlusive ingredients can then help soften the skin and reduce excessive water loss.
The goal isn’t necessarily to find the thickest moisturizer possible. It’s to give your skin the pieces it’s currently missing.
More Exfoliation Isn’t Always the Answer
Dry, flaky skin creates a very understandable temptation:
Scrub it off.
Sometimes controlled exfoliation absolutely helps. But when flaking is being driven by dehydration or barrier disruption, repeatedly exfoliating the surface without addressing the underlying problem can create a cycle of irritation.
Skin feels rough.
You exfoliate.
It temporarily feels smoother.
Barrier function becomes more compromised.
Skin gets flaky again.
You exfoliate again.
This is especially important if you’re already using retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, exfoliating acids, acne medications, or receiving professional treatments.
Sometimes the smartest thing we can do for your skin is less.
Denver Skin Still Needs Sunscreen
Colorado’s sunshine is one of the best parts of living here, but elevation also matters when we’re talking about UV exposure.
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen remains important year-round, including during winter.
This becomes even more important when we’re treating concerns like melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, rosacea, acne marks, or signs of photoaging.
Barrier care and sun protection aren’t particularly glamorous recommendations, but they’re two of the foundations that allow us to do more interesting corrective work safely.
What We Do Differently in a Facial
A custom facial shouldn’t be a predetermined sequence of products performed exactly the same way every time you come in.
Your skin changes.
Weather changes. Hormones change. Medications change. Stress changes. Your home routine changes.
So we adjust with it.
At The Skin Sanctum, we may modify exfoliation, hydration, massage techniques, masks, devices, treatment time, and barrier support depending on what we’re seeing and feeling in your skin that day.
Sometimes your skin is ready for corrective work.
Sometimes it needs hydration and recovery.
Both can be productive appointments.
Building a Better Denver Skincare Routine
For many people living in Colorado, a strong baseline routine is surprisingly simple:
A gentle cleanser. A hydrating step if needed. A moisturizer appropriate for your skin. Daily sunscreen.
Then we add corrective ingredients intentionally.
You don’t need seven exfoliating products just because your skin has texture. You don’t necessarily need to abandon every active because you’re dry, either.
The goal is finding the point where we can create change without constantly asking your skin to recover from your routine.
If your skin has felt perpetually dry, tight, reactive, flaky, or impossible to figure out since moving to Colorado, we can help you determine whether you’re dealing with true dryness, dehydration, barrier disruption or usually, a little bit of everything.
